On Good Friday 2007, the then Minister for Lands Tony Kelly announced his intention to grant a 52 year lease over the most prized part of the Killalea State Park to  private equity giants, Mariner Property and  Babcock and Brown.

This secret announcement was no accident. There had been no serious public consultation about the proposal. The Killalea State Park Trust were sworn to secrecy. Representatives of Shellharbour and Kiama councils on the Trust

were forbidden to inform their councils of the details of the 52-year lease.

The  community is vigorously opposed to the development. There have been numerous  public meetings, demonstrations and delegations to Parliament, and petitions of over 15 000 signatures tabled.

Opposition has been constantly expressed in the Illawarra Mercury, the front page of the Sydney Morning Herald, the Daily Telegraph, and the ABC’s Stateline. For complete media coverage to date please click here

The South Coast Labour Council has placed green bans on the site

and the Environmental Defender’s Office is to fight the development in the Courts on behalf of the Save Killalea Coalition Inc, the company incorporated to act in the interests of the community.
